If you have a bit of extra time during your Beijing vacation, you can significantly deepen your Beijing travel as well as experience in China by taking advantage of any one of the numerous historical and cultural attractions located within one or a few hours’ drive of the old imperial capital.
The imperial tombs offer fascinating insight into the lives and loves – and sometimes intrigues – of China’s former emperors. Make a trip to see some of the many imperial tombs set in nearby Hebei Province, such as the fine Eastern Qing Tombs, which are located 78 miles (110 kilometers) southwest of the city. The tombs are home to nine emperors plus their empresses and concubines. Or visit the tomb of a Han-dynasty prince who died almost 2000 years ago.

To learn about someone even older, visit the caves of Zhoukoudian, the home of Peking Man, who roamed this neighborhood 30 miles (48 kilometers) southwest of Beijing some half a million years ago.
Because Beijing was an ancient center of Buddhism, the mountain areas ringing the city are rich in rustic old temples, many dating back more than 500 years. Completed in the 15th century, Fahai Temple, which lies to the west of the capital, will impress visitors with its gorgeous interior frescoes. The grounds of the sacred complex of Badachu, in the Western Hills, are rich with Mongolians, cypresses, pines, ginkgos, and other beautiful trees.
Jump on one of the many trains to the city of Tianjin, just an hour southeast, and explore one of Beijing’s urban neighbors. Walk around the old European-controlled parts of the city, peeking into hundred-year-old Catholic churches and a Qing dynasty mosque.
For a nice escape from the city, explore Chuandixia Ancient Village, a village where farmers still live in century-old courtyard houses. For those who enjoy outdoor life, the scenic area of Shidu, about 31 miles (50 kilometers) south of Beijing, provides many opportunities for hiking, kayaking, boating, ice-skating, horseback riding and even bungee jumping.
