After the communists came to power in year 1949, Beijing experienced its most dramatic redesign since the Ming dynasty Emperor Yongle laid out his conception of the capital in the 15th century. In fact, the communists left not just one stamp on the city’s appearance, but many. Beijing’s architectural mish mash follows the lurching twists and turns of the Communist Party – from builders of a socialist utopia (the Great Hall of the People) and champions of nationalists aspirations (the China Millennium Monument) to capitalists (Oriental Plaza). The only agreement between the stylistically incompatible phases has been the gradual, and often dramatic, altering of ancient Beijing.
Under the communists, the vast city walls and most of their splendid gates, along with numerous old temples, were the first to be destroyed and replaced with graceless socialist buildings. Along with reform in 1979 came new directives to play catch-up with the West. Narrow Beijing Hutong made way for wider roads, shopping malls and apartment blocks; Beijing as a modern city of high-rises and shimmering towers began to take shape.
More recently, China has proven itself to be a significant player on the global economic stage as its economy surges to new-found heights, a fact that has fueled boundless growth in its major cities, especially Beijing. This, combined with the city’s new hosting of the 2008 Summer Olympic Games, have turned Beijing’s architectural narrative increasingly topsy-turvy. More than ever before, huge swaths of old hutongs and courtyard houses have been razed to make way for new housing, business complexes, hotels, and Olympic venues. Estimated to cost more than 20 billion dollars, the preparations for the Summer Games have altered the city’s layout in a manner that hasn’t been seen in this city since imperial times. Glassy new skyscrapers, highways, subway lines, and sidewalks paved with shiny new tiles all combine to create the look of a sophisticated modern city.
International architects have flocked to the scene, among them Paul Andreu, who designed the enormous National Grand Theater, a modernist glass dome that seems to float on a man-made lake; and Norman Foster, the creative mind behind the new Terminal 3 at Beijing Capital International Airport, with its striking monitoring tower topped with a red roof. Both building are symbolic of the new Beijing, yet both are at odds – ideologically and aesthetically – with adjacent traditional buildings and even with the spirit of the city itself.
Beijing’s makeover, however, has delivered massive shots of confidence to the city’s residents. Riding a swelling tide of patriotism, the 2008 Olympics have come at a time when China’s international stock is on the rise at a blinding pace. Beijingers have the world’s attention and are reveling in the spotlight.
